Fluid Dynamics: the Oriental Brush as an Expressionist Art Form by Ari Tomita

  1. Introduction: An introduction to ink, papers, brushes and basic brush technique, and to the philosophy of yin and yang. Practice beginning brush strokes.

  2. More Basic Brush Strokes and Techniques: More basic brush strokes and brush techniques. Practice in rhythm and timing connecting the mind, body and the brush. An introduction to different brushes.

  3. Spatial Balancing: Introduction to spatial balance by combining forms. Practicing brush technique to improve rhythm and timing.

  4. Curved Lines and Connections: An introduction to curved lines and the technique of connecting brush strokes. Practicing additional techniques for combining forms.

  5. Fluid Compositions: Learning techniques for creating fluid compositions. Working on the elements of symmetry, form and composition using the yin-yang principles.

  6. Transforming Sensations into Brushstrokes: Learn to transform the tactile and textural sensations into artistic brush stroke impressions within the framework of symmetry, balance, and harmony.

  7. Responding to Musical Impressions: Learn to transpose the feelings evoked by musical impressions into brush art expressions within the framework of symmetry, balance, and harmony.

  8. Review: A comprehensive review of everything learned to date, with special attention to working on and improving individual skills.

  9. Breaking through Rules of Composition: Bending and stretching the rules of composition: introduction to the symmetry of asymmetry, the balance of imbalance, and the harmony of disharmony.

  10. Creating Your own Brush Pieces: Learning to create brush art compositions with a focused mind and a relaxed body. Complete two pieces of brush art according to the course principles.
