My work has been one of continual experimentation. Currently my focus is abstract brush art with traditional brushes and black Oriental ink, combining brush strokes with other forms in Japanese watercolor.
The artwork combines two elements: fluid brush strokes filled with motion, vital energy, and textures expressed in an ocean of black; and colorful geometric or abstract forms alive in color. The abstract forms are often created out of deconstructed or dissolved brush strokes. The geometric forms are variations of circles, squares, and triangles.
In yin-yang cosmology and Zen, these geometric forms express the three main universal conditions: Heaven, which is round and indicates intangible energy; Earth, which is square, and refers to organic matter and physical form; and Person.
My art represents a new extension of a form of modern Japanese brush art called Bokusho. This has been a natural transition that expresses the resolution of my artistic and aesthetic with cultural duality.
I am striving to express various dimensions of time, space,
and motion, and dissolve the boundaries of structure, while
combining dynamic energy with inner calm, and remaining true to the integrity of both cultures.
